The brand operates in the United Kingdom and Ireland and is a part of the wider jewellery retailer, Signet Group. While the roots of H Samuel are found in Liverpool in 1821 when brothers Moses and Lewis Samuel opened a clock-making and silversmith business. But H Samuel really took off in 1862 when Harriet Samuel took over her father-in-law’s Moses’ business. From here she moved the brand to Market Street in Manchester and opened a mail-order company. With the help of her son, she grew the business and the first H. Samuel shop was opened in 1890 in Preston, followed by more branches across Lancashire and Rochdale. The company moved its headquarters to Birmingham in 1912 when the growing business needed more space. This space is still occupied by the H Samuel company today.
